Word Won’t Open My Document: Is the File Corrupted or Is Word the Problem?

When Word will not open your document, first find out whether Word can open anything at all. In the “Word was unable to start” case on Reddit, Word itself had stopped working for months even though Excel and PowerPoint still ran, and reinstalling or repairing Office had not fixed the application. That is an application-level failure, not evidence that one DOCX is corrupted.
Use Two Files and Two Environments
Quick Isolation Test
- Word cannot start or no Word documents open: troubleshoot Word or Office.
- A known-good DOCX opens but one specific document does not: focus on that file.
- The suspect DOCX opens in Word for the web or another computer: the original Word installation is the stronger suspect.
- The suspect DOCX fails across appropriate Word environments while other files work: corruption becomes more likely.
Repair Only After the File Is Isolated as the Failure
For a file-specific problem, try Microsoft's Open and Repair. If a stable DOC or DOCX still remains unreadable, Repairit Word File Repair can be tested on a copy. If Word itself will not launch, solve that application problem first.
Decision Rule:
If every document fails in one Word installation, fix Word. If only one stable file fails everywhere, repair the file.
