How to Tell Whether Strange Symbols in a Word Document Are Caused by Corruption or Missing Fonts

Strange Word text can come from the font environment rather than from a damaged DOCX. In the Arial-specific Word problem on Reddit, normal and italic Arial changed after saving and reopening, while bold Arial and other programs using the same system font behaved differently. That pattern is more consistent with a Word/font rendering problem than proof that every affected document is corrupted.

Run the Font Test Before the Repair Test

Microsoft's modern font picker can flag fonts that are used in a document but missing from the current device. Word may substitute another font for display, which can change spacing and layout without changing the font assigned inside the file.

Missing Font or Corruption?
  • The issue follows one font across multiple documents: troubleshoot that font or Word's font handling.
  • The document looks correct on another device with the expected fonts: the DOCX is probably not the primary problem.
  • Text is unreadable across devices, Word reports damaged content, or the document cannot open normally: the file itself may be corrupted.

Use Repair Only After Display Causes Are Ruled Out

For a genuinely damaged Word file, first try Microsoft's Open and Repair. If the stable DOCX remains damaged, Repairit Word File Repair can be tested on a copy. Do not use document repair as a substitute for installing or correcting a missing font.

Fast Check:

If the symptom follows a font, fix the font environment. If it follows one file across proper environments, investigate the file.
