Why Does Word Formatting Change After I Close and Reopen the Document?

Formatting that changes after closing and reopening a Word document is not automatically corruption. In the Word Online case on Reddit, text colors changed and normal bullets became numbered bullets overnight. Because the document was being edited through a university account in Word for the web, saved styles, cloud versions, collaboration, and rendering all need to be checked before file repair.

Find Out Whether the Change Was Saved or Only Rendered Differently

Check in This Order
  • Open version history: compare the current cloud version with an earlier one.
  • Open a downloaded copy in desktop Word: if the local copy looks correct, the issue may be web rendering or account-side behavior.
  • Check styles and fonts: a style definition or missing font can change many paragraphs at once.
  • Test another document: if many files change in the same Word environment, the application or account is the stronger suspect.

Microsoft notes that Word for the web saves automatically and OneDrive provides version history for restoring an earlier document version. That is a better first step when the content changed between sessions.

When File Repair Becomes Relevant

If the downloaded DOCX itself contains persistent structural damage—such as unreadable content, blank sections, or file errors across appropriate Word environments—try Open and Repair. A still-damaged copy can then be tested with Repairit Word File Repair.

Decision Rule:

A formatting change after reopening is a symptom. Verify the saved version and environment before labeling the DOCX corrupted.
