How to Repair a Video That Has a File Size but Won't Play

If a video still has a file size but will not play, the footage is not necessarily lost. A nonzero file size means the file contains data, but it does not prove that the video container, metadata, indexes, or audio and video streams are complete enough for a media player to read. First rule out a playback or compatibility problem, then repair the file if corruption is the more likely cause.

In a video has a file size but won't play from Reddit case, an MP4 still occupied storage space but could not be played. This can happen because file size only shows how much data a file contains; it does not confirm that the video structure and media streams are intact.

Why Can a Video Have a File Size but Still Not Play?

A playable video contains more than raw footage. It also relies on structural information that tells a media player how to locate, decode, and synchronize the video and audio streams. If recording, transferring, editing, downloading, or recovering the file was interrupted, parts of that structure can become incomplete or damaged even though the file still occupies hundreds of megabytes or several gigabytes.

That is why file size alone cannot confirm that a video is healthy or fully repairable. A large file may still contain useful footage, but it can also contain damaged metadata, incomplete stream information, or incorrectly reconstructed data.

Key Point:

A nonzero file size is a reason to investigate the video further, not proof that all of the original video data is intact.

Check Whether the Video Actually Needs Repair

Before repairing the video, use its playback behavior and file condition to determine whether corruption is actually the most likely problem.

Does the Video Need Repair?
  • It plays in another compatible player or device: the file itself may be intact, so the issue is more likely related to the original player, codec support, or software compatibility.
  • The file is 0 bytes or much smaller than the recording should be: important video data may be missing. A repair tool cannot recreate footage that is not present in the file.
  • The video was recovered after deletion, formatting, or storage failure: a normal-looking filename and file size do not guarantee that all of the original video data was recovered correctly. Incomplete recovery may be the underlying problem.
  • The file has a plausible size but still fails in multiple compatible players: file-level corruption becomes more likely, and video repair is a reasonable next step.

If you want to check whether the file still contains recognizable media streams before repairing it, FFmpeg's official ffprobe documentation explains how media files, containers, and audio or video streams can be inspected.

If the video has a plausible file size but remains unplayable in compatible media players, Wondershare Repairit Video Repair can repair supported corrupted videos, with Advanced Repair available when a more severely damaged file requires a matching sample video.

Repair Limit:

Video repair can fix damaged file structures when usable media data is still present, but it cannot recreate video or audio data that has been overwritten or is missing from the file. If an unplayable video was recovered from deleted or formatted storage, incomplete recovery may need to be addressed before further repair attempts.
