What to Do When Untrunc Makes a Recovered Video Play but the Screen Is Still Black

If untrunc makes a recovered video open but the screen remains black, the successful open does not mean the underlying video stream is healthy. In the Sony recovered video that became playable but stayed black after untrunc from Reddit, the result also contained harsh mechanical-sounding audio with only occasional fragments of voices.

What a Black Result After Untrunc Usually Means

Untrunc can rebuild MP4/MOV container information from a healthy reference file. If the repaired container opens but the video remains black, the recovered file may still contain damaged, missing, or incorrectly reconstructed media data. The next question is whether enough valid stream data remains for another repair method to use.

Test a File-Level Repair on the Original Recovered Copy

Keep the untrunc output for comparison, but run Repairit Video Repair on the original recovered file rather than repeatedly modifying the already-rebuilt version.

  1. Step 1

Add the original recovered file and try standard repair.

  2. Step 2

If it remains black or severely broken, try Advanced Repair with a healthy sample from the same camera and format.

  3. Step 3

Preview the exact timestamps where untrunc showed black video and broken audio before deciding whether the result is usable.

When to Stop:

If multiple repair approaches only rebuild the container while the picture remains black and media data is missing, return to the recovery source if possible. Container repair cannot substitute for absent video payload.
