Why Do Files Recovered from an SSD Have Names and Sizes but Still Won’t Open?

Files recovered from an SSD can show the correct-looking filename, extension, folder path, and even a believable size while still refusing to open because those values may come from surviving file-system metadata rather than from intact file content. On an SSD, TRIM makes that distinction especially important.

Metadata Can Survive Even When the File Content Does Not

The user in an SSD folder recovery with 3,400 unopenable files from Reddit saw recovered EXE, TXT, PDF, and other files appear on a different destination drive with filenames and sizes. The recovery result looked successful at a glance, but none of the files actually worked.

That is possible because a recovery program can sometimes reconstruct directory records, filenames, extensions, timestamps, and logical sizes even when some or all of the original data blocks are no longer readable. Microsoft documents TRIM as the mechanism by which the file system notifies storage that deleted clusters are no longer needed.

What the Result Means
  • Correct name + correct size: useful metadata survived; this does not prove payload integrity.
  • File opens partly or contains recognizable content: enough real data may remain for repair or partial recovery.
  • File signature/header exists but the rest is empty or repetitive: the recovery may have reconstructed only a shell.
  • File has no meaningful content at all: repeating repair attempts will not recreate the deleted payload.

Verify the Recovery Before Trying to Repair Everything

Open a small representative sample from the healthy destination drive. For PDFs or Office files, test in the correct application; for archives, test extraction; for media, play beyond the first few seconds. A filename, thumbnail, or size is not enough. If the SSD is still stable and the payload has not been proven absent, Wondershare Recoverit SSD Data Recovery may still be relevant for a fresh recovery attempt, but completed TRIM or overwritten data cannot be reversed by recovery software.

Repair Only the Files That Still Contain Real Data

When a supported recovered document or archive contains real payload, has a plausible size, and still fails after being copied to healthy storage, Wondershare Repairit File Repair can be tested on a duplicate. If the recovered file is only metadata plus zero-filled or missing content, the correct diagnosis is missing data rather than ordinary file corruption.

Recommend

Use Repairit for the subset of recovered files that still contain meaningful data but remain structurally unreadable. Do not batch-repair thousands of recovered shells before verifying that representative files actually contain payload.
