Does SFC Finding Corrupted Files Mean Your Photos, Videos, or Documents Are Damaged?

No. An SFC result saying that corrupted files were found does not, by itself, mean your photos, videos, PDFs, or Office documents are damaged. In the Windows drive-path troubleshooting thread from Reddit, the user ran sfc /scannow; Windows repaired some files, but the original problem still involved an app path/storage-location error.

What SFC Is Actually Checking

Microsoft explains that System File Checker scans protected Windows system files and replaces damaged or incorrect system versions when possible. It is a Windows-repair tool, not a general integrity scanner for every personal file on your PC.

Check Personal Files Separately
  • Photo: open the full-resolution image and confirm it decodes completely.
  • Video: play and scrub through the beginning, middle, and end in a compatible player.
  • Word/Excel/PPT/PDF: open the file in its native application and check whether content, pages, formulas, or slides render normally.

Use Repairit Only for a Personal File That Independently Fails

If a particular supported document or media file is present but unreadable, unplayable, or structurally damaged after you test it directly, then the matching Repairit repair feature may be appropriate. Repairit File Repair supports damaged document and archive formats, while Repairit Video Repair is for damaged video files.

Key Point:

Treat SFC’s “corrupt files” message as evidence about Windows system files. Treat a personal file as damaged only when that specific file fails its own open, parse, or playback checks.
