How to Tell Whether a Recovered SSD File Is Corrupted or Its Data Was Erased by TRIM

A recovered SSD file is not automatically repairable just because recovery software restored its name, extension, and file size. The key question is whether the recovered file still contains meaningful payload. If SSD TRIM has already caused the deleted logical blocks to return zeros or otherwise no longer expose the original content, file repair cannot recreate the missing bytes.

Why a Recovered File Can Look Complete but Still Contain No Usable Data

In a real SSD recovery result with thousands of files that would not open from Reddit, the user recovered about 3,400 files from an internal M.2 SSD less than 30 minutes after deletion. The restored files included PDF, TXT, EXE, and other types and appeared to have filenames and sizes, yet they could not actually be opened or run.

Microsoft describes TRIM as a file-delete notification that tells the underlying storage which clusters have been released. On NTFS, TRIM is normally enabled unless it has been disabled. That means metadata left in the file system can outlive usable access to the deleted payload; a directory entry or size value is not proof that the original blocks are still recoverable.

Use These Signals
  • The recovered file previews or opens partly: meaningful data is still present, so structural repair may be worth testing.
  • The file has a plausible size but every compatible app rejects it: inspect whether the payload contains varied real data before assuming ordinary corruption.
  • The file is mostly zeros, repeated filler, or has no recognizable content: treat it as missing-data recovery, not file repair.
  • The source SSD is still stable and the deleted data has not been verified as TRIM-discarded: preserve the source and consider recovery before spending time on repair.

When Recovery Should Come Before Repair

If the SSD is still readable and the deleted content has not been proven absent, use a recovery workflow first. Wondershare Recoverit SSD Data Recovery can be considered for supported logical-loss cases on a stable SSD, but its own current guidance notes that completed TRIM, overwritten bytes, encryption, and physical failure can prevent recovery. Save recovered files to another physical drive and verify their content there.

When File Repair Is Still Reasonable

If a recovered PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ZIP, or another supported file has a plausible size, contains real nonzero content, has been saved to healthy storage, and still fails in appropriate apps, Wondershare Repairit File Repair is a reasonable next test. Repairit can work on damaged file structures and readable content; it cannot reconstruct original bytes that TRIM has already made unavailable.

Recommend

Use Repairit only after confirming that the recovered file still contains real payload and remains unreadable from healthy storage. Preview the repair result before saving it, and keep the original recovered copy unchanged.
