What to Do When Most Recovered Files Work but Some Are Corrupted

It is possible for a recovery to succeed overall while leaving a small number of damaged files. In this r/datarecovery case after an accidental partition loss, the user recovered more than 200 GB of data and reported that most important files were intact while a very small number were corrupted.

Do Not Re-run Recovery on Everything Automatically

First copy the healthy recovered files to safe storage. For each failed file, check whether it has a plausible size, the expected extension, and at least some readable structure. A single corrupted file does not mean the entire recovery set is bad.

Choose the Next Step by File State
  • File opens normally: keep it; no repair is needed.
  • File has plausible size but the native app reports corruption: try file repair on a copy.
  • File is 0 KB, implausibly small, or mostly empty data: another recovery attempt from the preserved source may be more useful.
  • The source drive is unstable: avoid repeated scanning and prioritize a stable image or professional recovery path.

Repair the Failed Supported Files Separately

For Word, Excel, PDF, PowerPoint, ZIP, and other supported formats that contain data but will not open correctly, Repairit File Repair can be tested on copies of the corrupted results. Preview the repaired file before you consider the problem closed.

Key Limit:

File repair can work with damaged file structure; it cannot recreate sectors or content that were never recovered or were overwritten before recovery.
