Why Can't My Mac Read Video Files Downloaded from Google Drive? Is the Video Actually Corrupted?

A Mac error saying that some files cannot be read does not prove the videos are corrupted. In the Osmo Pocket 3 files that could not be read from Google Drive on a Mac from Reddit, the user was working through Drive streaming, offline availability, sync buttons, and failed drag-and-drop attempts. That makes incomplete local availability a more important first check than file repair.

Make Sure the File Is Fully Local

When Google Drive is set to stream files, Finder can show a file entry even though the complete payload is still in the cloud. Copying, opening, or editing can fail if the sync is incomplete or the Drive client cannot fetch the content.

Corruption Check
  • The file plays on the Windows PC where it was originally uploaded: the source copy is probably healthy.
  • The Mac cannot make the file available offline: solve the Drive sync/download problem first.
  • A fully downloaded local copy fails in several compatible players: then corruption becomes more plausible.

Only Use Video Repair After You Have a Complete Local Copy

If you can confirm that the file has finished downloading, has a plausible size, and still fails across appropriate players or editors, then Repairit Video Repair can be tested on that local copy. Do not run repair against a cloud placeholder or partially synced file.

Best Diagnostic:

Compare the Mac file size and playback with the known-good Windows copy. A cloud-transfer problem and a corrupted video can produce similar “cannot read” symptoms, but they require different fixes.
