Why Does My High-Resolution Photo Look Grainy in InDesign?
A high-resolution photo can look grainy in InDesign even when the original image is fine. InDesign may show a lower-quality preview for performance, and an image can also lose effective resolution when it is pasted instead of placed or scaled beyond its native size.
A user in this grainy InDesign photo case from Reddit described a high-resolution image that would not appear clear in a booklet even after trying different file sizes and compressed versions.
Check the InDesign Preview Before Changing the Photo
Adobe's pixelated graphics guidance explains that InDesign can intentionally display a lower-resolution preview while keeping the original linked image intact.
Three Quick Checks
- Switch to View > Display Performance > High Quality Display: if the image becomes sharp, the problem was the working preview.
- Use File > Place rather than paste: pasted graphics can contain only low-resolution preview data, while Place links to the original file.
- Check Effective PPI in the Links panel: scaling a high-resolution image far beyond its native size lowers the resolution available at the final layout size.
Compare the Exported Result
Export a short PDF or image using the same settings you plan to deliver, then inspect the photo at its intended viewing size. If the export is sharp while the InDesign canvas looks grainy, keep the original image and treat the issue as display performance.
If the exported result is also soft or noisy, check the original image at 100% zoom. A large pixel count does not guarantee that the captured detail itself is sharp.
Enhance the Photo When the Source Itself Still Looks Soft or Grainy
When the source photo opens normally but still looks soft, noisy, or low-detail outside InDesign, Wondershare Repairit AI Photo Enhancer can sharpen visible detail, reduce grain, and upscale the image before you place it back into the layout.
After enhancement, place the improved image in InDesign and recheck Effective PPI at the final size. This keeps the enhancement step focused on the actual image quality rather than an InDesign preview setting.
