How to Fix Blurry Faces in an Old Photo Without Making Them Look AI-Generated
Blurry faces can often be improved, but the goal should be recognizable clarity, not maximum sharpness. Over-processing can create waxy skin, perfectly symmetrical eyes, new teeth, or facial contours that were never visible in the source.
A blurry group photo with AI changing faces from Reddit request shows the tradeoff clearly: the user wanted a family tradition photo improved, but previous AI attempts badly altered the faces.
Know When Sharpening Becomes Reconstruction
Natural vs. AI-Looking
- Natural restoration: edges are clearer, noise is reduced, and known features remain consistent.
- Over-restoration: pores disappear, expressions change, eyes become unnaturally crisp, or different people start to share the same facial style.
- Missing source detail: if the original never captured enough information, no tool can know the exact hidden feature without inference.
Enhance the Face and Verify It Against the Original
Wondershare Repairit AI Photo Enhancer can improve blurry and low-resolution photos. For an old portrait, use the enhancement as a candidate result and compare it closely with the source instead of judging only by sharpness.
- Step 1
Add the clearest available image. A higher-resolution scan gives the enhancer more real information to work with.
- Step 2
Enhance the image. Improve clarity without adding unrelated creative edits.
- Step 3
Check face identity. Compare eye spacing, nose shape, mouth, hairline, glasses, and expression with the original or trustworthy reference photos.
For blurry or low-resolution portraits, Wondershare Repairit AI Photo Enhancer can improve clarity and facial detail, but important faces should still be compared with the source before the enhanced result is accepted.

A sharper face is not automatically a more accurate face. When identity matters, authenticity should outrank visual perfection.
