How to Tell Whether an Excel Workbook Is Corrupted or Just Formatted Incorrectly
An Excel workbook is not necessarily corrupted just because it looks wrong. If values and formulas are intact but colors, fonts, or styles change, first test formatting rules and workbook-specific settings. File repair becomes relevant when the workbook itself is unreadable, fails to open consistently, or keeps structural damage across suitable Excel environments.
Start With What Actually Changed
A real Excel text turning white again after reopening from Reddit scenario describes text that was changed back from white, saved, and then returned to white the next time the spreadsheet opened. That symptom is frustrating, but by itself it does not prove XLSX corruption.
Which Path Fits?
- Only color, font, number format, or cell appearance changes: inspect Conditional Formatting, Cell Styles, themes, macros, and workbook-specific formatting first.
- Formulas and values are correct but the workbook looks different on another machine: compare fonts, Excel version, add-ins, locale, and theme settings.
- The same workbook shows unreadable content, missing sheets, broken structure, or open/repair errors across appropriate Excel installations: file-level corruption becomes more plausible.
Rule Out Formatting Before Repair
Open the workbook with macros disabled if applicable, check Home > Conditional Formatting > Manage Rules, and compare the affected cell with a nearby normal cell. Microsoft documents that conditional-formatting rules can apply different formats based on formulas, rule order, and precedence. If clearing or correcting a rule stops the behavior, you have a formatting problem rather than a damaged workbook.
Also save a copy under a new name and test it on another suitable Excel installation. A problem that follows only one device or one Excel configuration points away from file corruption.
When Excel File Repair Is Reasonable
If the workbook itself remains damaged after formatting and environment checks—for example Excel reports unreadable content, the workbook will not open reliably, or structural elements are missing—Microsoft recommends Excel's built-in Open and Repair workflow. If the file still needs a dedicated repair attempt, Wondershare Repairit Excel File Repair is designed for corrupted Excel workbooks and can repair XLS/XLSX content, formulas, charts, and formatting. Always work on a copy and compare repaired results with the original.

Use Repairit only after you have ruled out ordinary formatting rules and confirmed that the workbook itself is damaged. Preview the repaired spreadsheet and verify formulas, sheets, charts, and formatting before replacing your working copy.
