Why Does DaVinci Resolve Show a Video File as Audio Only When It Plays Normally Elsewhere?

If a video plays normally with picture in other players but DaVinci Resolve shows only an audio track, first check whether Resolve can decode that video stream. MP4 or MOV can contain codecs and profiles that work in one player but are unsupported or handled differently in a particular Resolve setup.

A real video showing as audio only in DaVinci Resolve from Reddit describes an MP4 that plays correctly in normal video players while Resolve recognizes only its audio. Other clips in the same project work normally.

Check Whether Resolve Can Decode the Video Stream

MP4 is a container, not a guarantee that every video codec or profile inside it is supported in every Resolve setup. Check the file's codec, bit depth, chroma subsampling, and profile, then compare them with Blackmagic Design's DaVinci Resolve supported codec list.

Which Path Fits?
  • Video plays normally in VLC, QuickTime, or another compatible editor: treat this as a Resolve decode/container issue first.
  • A short transcode to a clearly supported codec imports with video: the original file is usable; repair is not the next step.
  • The same file has no picture or shows repeatable visual corruption in multiple compatible players: file-level damage becomes more plausible.

Create a Resolve-Friendly Test Copy

Make a copy of the original and transcode that copy to a Resolve-friendly codec while keeping the source untouched. If the test copy imports with both picture and sound, continue along the compatibility path. If the original later shows the same missing picture or fixed visual corruption in other compatible players, shift the diagnosis to the source file itself.

Next Branch:

If a supported transcode restores picture in Resolve, keep troubleshooting compatibility. If the same source starts failing or shows the same fixed corruption across compatible players, investigate the media file itself.
