How to Check Whether Personal Files Were Damaged After an SSD Started Disconnecting
If an SSD has started disconnecting or disappearing, treat the storage device as the first problem and your files as potentially at risk. In the intermittently recognized SSD problem from Reddit, the PC moved from black-screen crashes to boot-device errors, BSODs, and periods where the SSD was not detected at all.
Protect Readable Data Before You Test Individual Files
If the SSD is still readable and important data is not already backed up, copy priority files to a different healthy drive first. If the SSD repeatedly disconnects, disappears, or causes the system to hang, repeated scans and write-heavy repair attempts can be a poor next step. A stable copy or recovery image is a better basis for file validation.
Verify the Copied Files
- Documents: open them in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF software, or the app that created them.
- Photos: open the full image and inspect beyond the thumbnail.
- Videos: play and scrub across the timeline; check audio and the end of the clip.
- Archives/projects: test extraction or open them in the native application.
Repair Only Stable Files That Actually Fail
If a copied file has a plausible size but its native application reports corruption, you can test the matching Repairit repair function on the copy. Repairit File Repair is intended for supported files that exist but are damaged; it is not a physical SSD repair tool and should not be used as a substitute for protecting data from an unstable drive.
Do Not Mix the Two Problems:
First stabilize or recover the data from the SSD. Then diagnose individual copied files. A drive that disconnects is a storage-reliability issue; an unreadable DOCX, PDF, ZIP, or other copied file is a separate file-repair question.
