Why Does Roto Brush Keep Adding and Removing Random Areas in After Effects?

Roto Brush can appear to add or remove random areas when the subject edge changes, foreground and background share similar colors, reflections move, or small holes expose the background through the subject. The practical fix is to improve the starting segmentation and correct propagation only where it drifts.

In this difficult Roto Brush case from Reddit, the user was isolating a plastic figure filmed against an uneven blue screen. Blue reflections contaminated the edges, the figure contained many small openings, and the Roto Brush eventually began adding and removing areas unexpectedly.

Start From the Cleanest Frame, Not the First Frame

Choose a frame where the subject shape is clear and the edge contrast is strongest. Paint the foreground with the Roto Brush, subtract obvious background mistakes, and then propagate forward or backward from that stronger base.

When the Selection Drifts
  • Blue spill merges with the background: correct only the contaminated edge instead of repainting the whole subject.
  • Small holes inside the object fill in: subtract those regions on a clear frame so propagation has a better model of the interior geometry.
  • The edge changes sharply during a turn: add a new correction stroke near the change rather than repeatedly adjusting earlier clean frames.
  • Hair, reflections, or thin details chatter: use the Refine Edge tool after the main foreground selection is stable.

Refine the Edge After the Main Matte Is Stable

Adobe's Roto Brush edge-refinement workflow recommends previewing the selection, refining difficult edges, and adjusting the Refine Edge Matte controls after propagation. Freeze the result only after the problem ranges have been corrected.

For this kind of shot, the goal is not to make Roto Brush perfectly understand every frame automatically. It is to give it a strong base frame, correct the points where the subject changes meaningfully, and keep the number of manual fixes smaller than full frame-by-frame rotoscoping.
